Added to the stem of a word, a truncation symbol will find that stem plus anything that comes after it. The symbol used to truncate a word depends upon the index, database, or search engine you are using. |

return records on psychology, psychological, psychologist. ? is used as the truncation symbol, for example, in the Eli Library Catalog. |

return records on environment, environmental, or even environs. * is used as the truncation symbol, for example, in Academic Search Complete and a majority of the other article databases. |

Truncation can also be used within a word. For example, wom*n o wom?n will return woman and women. |
